Roche Harbor at a glance
Roche Harbor is a resort village built around a marina on San Juan Island. Historic buildings, among them the Company Store, stand in the village, and the marina is full of boats.
You arrive by road from Friday Harbor, by boat, or on a tour that departs from the dock. The resort estimates about 20 minutes by car from the Friday Harbor ferry terminal. Treat that as a planning value, not a promise.

The Sculpture Park
The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is open every day of the year from dawn to dusk. There is no admission fee, and donations are welcome.
The park lists more than 150 works of art spread over 20 acres with five trails. Dogs are welcome. The exhibit changes over time, so the exact works you see will differ from visit to visit. Wear shoes you can walk a trail in.

Where to sleep in the resort
The resort lists several kinds of lodging. Know the type before you book, because the bathroom setup is not the same in every room.
- Hotel de Haro: some rooms have their own bathroom, and some use separate shared bathrooms. Ask which kind you are booking.
- Quarryman Hall and McMillin Suites.
- Village Homes, Cottages and Condos.
The wider choice of towns and islands for your base is on the where to stay page. Check room details, rates and cancellation terms with the resort directly.
Parking and arriving by boat
The resort map shows lots with a 2-hour limit and areas where overnight parking requires a permit. That is not a general rate for every lot in the village, so read the signs when you park and ask the resort if you plan to stay the night.
Boaters should ask the marina about slips and rates by boat length before arrival. Whales are another reason to slow down on the approach. In Washington waters you must keep at least 1,000 yards (about 900 m) from Southern Resident orcas, and closed refuge islands and rocks come with a 200-yard no-vessel zone. The full rules are on the whale watching page.

Whale watching from the dock
The Classic whale watch of San Juan Safaris leaves from Friday Harbor and from Roche Harbor. The operator lists $125 per adult and $89 per child for a trip of 3 to 4 hours. These base prices were listed in October 2026 and do not show every extra fee. The child age limit is not given on the overview page.
There is no promise of a sighting on any boat, and the same distance rules apply to the tour boat as to your own. Pick a day when you can reschedule if the weather turns.

Getting to Roche Harbor from the mainland
Roche Harbor has no ferry of its own in the Washington State Ferries timetable. The ferry stop on the island is Friday Harbor, and you continue by road. From Anacortes the crossing takes 70 minutes in the fall 2026 example. A walk-on adult fare is $18 and a car with driver is $64.15 (base fares since May 1, 2026, before the 3 percent card surcharge and the 35 percent vehicle surcharge from May 1 to Sept. 30). The state recommends vehicle reservations, and they are free.
You can also fly. The seaplane from Seattle lands at the Friday Harbor marina in about 45 minutes, and a wheeled plane from Boeing Field to Friday Harbor Airport takes about 35 minutes. These are operator estimates without check-in or transfers. The direct passenger ferry from Seattle is suspended for 2026. The ferry page has the complete picture.
