How tours work in the San Juan Islands

Three things shape every plan: the season, the ferry or flight that gets you there, and the rules for staying away from orcas. Boat tours and kayak days depend on the weather and the operator's season, and at one kayak operator a missed ferry is no reason for a refund.

The prices below are the ones operators publish, so treat them as examples and not as a survey of the market. A published price is not always the final price, because taxes, fees and options can change it at checkout. This is an independent guide with no link to any operator.

If you want orcas, a boat trip is the straightforward choice, but it comes with no guarantee. If you prefer a quiet day on the water, a kayak tour is the alternative once the next season opens. The things to do page shows how these fit with the sights on land.

Whale watching by boat

Prices as published in October 2026. They can change.

Classic whale watch

San Juan Safaris lists the Classic tour from Friday Harbor and from Roche Harbor at $125 for adults and $89 for children. It lasts 3 to 4 hours. The overview page shows no child age limit and no full list of extra fees, so ask before you book.

Adventure whale watch

The Adventure tour from Friday Harbor is advertised at $150 for adults and children alike. Do not compare it with the Classic fare as if it were the same trip.

What no tour can promise

Nobody can guarantee a sighting, from a boat or from the shore. Bigg's orcas and humpback whales are also seen in the Salish Sea.

The distance rules

Since 1 January 2025, boats of every kind must stay at least 1,000 yards (about 900 m) from Southern Resident orcas in Washington waters, kayaks and paddleboards included. Inside that distance you must stay out of their path and move away at no more than 7 knots. Keep 200 yards from other orcas and 100 yards from other whales. If you cannot tell which orcas they are, assume they are Southern Residents.

Sea kayak tours

One operator's terms as an example. Check any operator's rules before you book.

Full-day west side tour

Discovery Sea Kayaks lists a full-day tour of 6 hours at $160, with equipment and lunch. The west side offer includes transport to and from the beach and a listed departure of 10:30 am. Check the price again when you book a 2027 date.

Season

The operator states that its 2026 kayak season has ended and that reservations now refer to 2027. Do not plan on an October departure.

Age and weight

West side tours are for ages 12 and over. Family-oriented tours from Friday Harbor can take younger children if they weigh at least 55 lb (25 kg), which the life jacket requires.

Cancellation

For full-day, half-day and sunset tours, the operator refunds in full from 30 days ahead, 50% at 15 to 29 days, and nothing at 0 to 14 days. A missed ferry is not an exception. The operator may cancel or change a route for safety reasons.

Day trips from Seattle

Seattle and Friday Harbor are linked by air and by road, not by a direct ferry in 2026.

Floatplane and whale watch package

The 2026 package combines a floatplane round trip with the Classic whale watch. It costs $550 for adults and $514 for children aged 2 to 12. Lodging is separate and the operator asks you to agree dates with them, so it is not available every day. The operator quotes about 45 minutes of flying time, but the whole day also holds the boat trip and transfers. Ask for the exact times of your date before you plan onward travel.

No direct ferry

The state utilities regulator approved the temporary stop of the passenger ferry between Seattle and Friday Harbor on 30 April 2026. The request covers 10 May 2026 to 10 May 2027. Do not plan on a resumption after that period.

By car and car ferry

The Anacortes terminal is at least 2.5 hours by car from Sea-Tac airport, plus the time before sailing. The ferry then takes 70 minutes to Friday Harbor in the fall timetable example. Adult foot passengers pay $18 in 2026, plus 3% if you pay by card, and young people up to 18 travel free as passengers.

Day cruise from Bellingham

The Friday Harbor day cruise ran in 2026 on Fridays to Sundays in June and early September, and daily from 3 July to 31 August. It left at 10 am and returned at 5 pm, with about 2 hours each way and 3 hours on land. Adults paid $79, ages 6 to 17 paid $39.50 and younger children were free. It is a day excursion, and the season has ended. Check the dates of the next season.

Before you book

Questions worth asking any operator.

Is it running on your date?

Seasons end and routes change with the weather. Confirm the date, and ask what happens if the operator cancels.

What does the price include?

Published prices are not always the final price. Ask about taxes, fees, food and the child age limit.

How do you get to the start?

Allow for the ferry from Anacortes and the drive to the harbor. Reserve a car space in advance, because standby space is limited.
