Which whales you may see
The best-known animals here are the Southern Resident orcas. They eat fish and depend heavily on Chinook salmon. NOAA names too little prey, pollutants and vessel traffic and noise as threats to them. Do not call every orca you see a Southern Resident: other orcas pass through as well.
Operators in the Salish Sea also list Bigg's orcas, also known as transient orcas, and humpback whales among the species seen on trips. None of these sightings is guaranteed on any given day. A good operator tells you the same, and so does this page.

The rules on the water
Washington has required all vessels to stay at least 1,000 yards (about 900 m) from Southern Resident orcas since Jan. 1, 2025. The rule covers motorized and non-motorized craft, so kayaks and stand-up paddleboards count. Washington's wildlife agency repeated the reminder on May 21, 2026.
- Inside the 1,000 yards, move out of the whales' path and away from them, at no more than 7 knots (about 13 km/h).
- If whales come closer than 400 yards (about 365 m) and it is safe, shift into neutral and wait.
- Paddlers are asked to stop paddling and raft up. Sailors let the sails luff.
- Other orcas: keep at least 200 yards (about 180 m). Other whales: at least 100 yards (about 90 m).
- If you cannot tell which orcas you are looking at, treat them as Southern Residents.
NOAA's species page describes federal distances of 200 and 400 yards. Washington's rule for Southern Residents is stricter, so plan around the larger number. Closed refuge islands and rocks, plus 200 yards of water around them, are also off limits to vessels. Only the public parts of Turn and Matia are excepted. That closure does not replace the whale distances.

When to go
The state park listing for Lime Kiln Point describes shore sightings from spring to fall, depending on the salmon runs. That is a general pattern, not a daily schedule and not a promise that Southern Residents are in the area. Nobody can tell you which week the orcas will pass.
Pick a day with a flexible plan. If you book a boat, choose a free cancellation option where you can, and keep a second activity ready, such as the museum or a walk. The weather page shows monthly temperatures and rain for Friday Harbor.

Learn first: The Whale Museum
The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor is a good start before a boat day. Admission is $13 for adults, $9 for seniors from age 65, and $6 for youth aged 6 to 18 and students with ID. Children up to 5 are free. The hours shown are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day, labeled as the summer schedule, so check the current hours before an autumn or winter visit.
The gift shop welcomes dogs, but dogs may not enter the exhibits. Groups of 10 or more should ask about group rates. More on the town is on the Friday Harbor page.

Whale watching in the San Juan Islands: frequently asked questions
Will I see orcas on a whale watching tour?
Not for sure. Sightings depend on where the whales are that day. Humpback whales and Bigg's orcas are also seen in the Salish Sea, but no operator can promise a particular animal.
When is the best time for whale watching in the San Juan Islands?
Shore sightings at Lime Kiln Point are described as spring to fall, depending on the salmon runs. Boat operators run tours through the season, and the exact dates change each year, so check with the operator.
How close can a boat or kayak get to orcas?
At least 1,000 yards (about 900 m) from Southern Resident orcas in Washington waters, including kayaks and paddleboards. For other orcas the minimum is 200 yards, and for other whales it is 100 yards.
Can I see whales from shore?
Yes, at Lime Kiln Point State Park on the west side of San Juan Island. You need a Discover Pass to park there, $10 per day or $45 per year in 2026. No shore sighting is guaranteed either.
Can I do a whale watching day trip from Seattle?
Yes, with a seaplane and boat package that lists $550 for adults and $514 for children aged 2 to 12 in 2026, lodging not included. The direct Seattle to Friday Harbor passenger ferry is suspended for the 2026 season. Read more on the ferry page.
Are the boat tour prices final?
They are the base prices the operators list. Booking fees or other extras can be added, so check the total at checkout.
